Substance abuse and addiction is a growing problem in this country and alcohol abuse plays a large part.
Two conventional methods are commonly used for alcohol testing - simple urine tests and Breathalyzers. These methods are used to detect if one has consumed alcohol recently; but no such method was able to ascertain if one had taken alcohol more than 12-24 hours ago. This is because alcohol is processed by the body very rapidly, usually at a rate of 1 drink per hour.
Recently, a new protocol has been developed which is being tagged as the "gold standard of alcohol testing" because it can tell if someone has used alcohol from days to up to a year history!
This powerful protocol successfully uses three testing techniques - the EtG (Ethyl Glucuronide) test, the EtS (Ethyl Sulphate) test, and the FAEE (Fatty Acid Ethyl Esters). These methods are able to sketch down the whole alcoholic consumption history of the last 80 hours and up to one year. This is a very useful tool for a zero tolerance policy on alcohol consumption.

FAQ:
1. Is the ETG test able to detect the difference between the different types of alcohol in the body?
YES! The ETG test detects Ethanol derivatives only. Ethanol alcohol is 'drinking alcohol'.
2. Will the frequent use of rubbing alcohol interfere with the ETG test results?
NO! The use of rubbing alcohol (isopropanol) will not interfere with the ethyl glucuronide test. It also will not result in a positive ETG.
Ethyl glucuronide (or ETG) is a metabolite only produced when alcohol is in the bloodstream. It is identified as a marker in alcohol through an analytical process that provides forensic evidence of the pattern of alcohol abuse - or absence of it.
The more alcohol a person consumes the greater amount of EtG markers are present in the bloodstream. The presence of EtG in the urine can be used to detect recent alcohol consumption, even after the ethanol alcohol is no longer measurable. As a result, it can be determined that a urine alcohol test employing EtG is a more accurate indicator of the recent consumption of alcohol as opposed to simply measuring for the existence of ethanol alcohol.
If the laboratory detects the presence of EtG in the urine sample, it then also tests for the presence of EtS (another alcohol metabolite). Testing for both these metabolites improves the accuracy and reliability of the test.
EtG / EtS and FAEE testing is frequently used for zero tolerance and alcohol abstinence programs such as Drug Courts, family law, treatment facilities, and school systems.
